How To Do Business in New York State

Before starting a business in New York State, you must first know the nature of your business. You may need several permits, licenses, or certificates. You can obtain these licenses from different New York State departments such as the Department of State, the Department of Taxation and Finance, etc. Some licenses have fees and other certificates may have no fees.

Your first step is to go to  Business Express then click start your business then Create a Custom Checklist then Get Started. It will open a business Wizard.

Make sure to provide accurate information about your business. Once completed it will provide a document that you can print it , save it to your computer or email it yourself. This document  provides you with  a list of permits/licenses/certificates.  

Here are a few thing to keep in mind about your business. What is the legal name of the business. What is the entity type–sole proprietorship, LLC, or corporation. What are physical and mailing address . Is it a foreign entity or domestic . You may also need an employer identification number (FEIN) from IRS.

You may also need to file taxes such as sales tax, corporation tax, withholding tax if you have employees. Make sure to file tax by due dates to file penalty and interest. If you are closing your company or selling there is procedure for it. Just changing the officers does not mean the company is sold. You may need to know about Bulk Sales
